G3.4 Relevant

MAKING GOALS RELEVANT

80% of an individual’s output usually comes from 20% of his or her activities. If you spend time creating goals that are not relevant to your job description or responsibilities, you may be busy performing activities that are not valuable to your role or the needs of the organization.

A SMART goal captures the contribution from the individual in the job or position

To determine if a goal is Relevant to you, ask…

  1. Is this goal the most important of all goals that need to be accomplished?
  2. Where does this goal “fit” or rank in relation to other goals to be achieved?
  3. To what Key Responsibility Area is this goal connected?
  4. If this goal is not accomplished at a satisfactory level, would/could it be argued that the Key Responsibility Area has not been fulfilled?

Remember

Trivial goals are worse than no goals—they direct energy away from what is really important.
