The Five Fundamentals of Problem Solving

1. Define the Problem

The first fundamental is critical in leading others toward their Goal Achievements. Every individual and team run into sets backs, obstacles, and challenges when attempting to advance their goals toward a desired outcome. Clearly defining and agreeing on the problem is the first step to solving that problem.

2. Generate Alternative Solutions

The second fundamental of the Problem Solving process is generating several recommended solutions to the problem. Brainstorm all of the different ways this problem can be solved. This fundamental stimulates individual and collaborative thinking around the most effective solutions to a problem, before actually attempting to resolve the issue.

3. Examine the Pros and Cons

The third fundamental of Problem Solving is to examine the Pros and Cons of the best alternative solutions an individual or team generated in step two of the problem solving process. Examining how each potential solution may impact the client or organization will shape how a team or individual advances their goal.

4. Choose A Solution

The fourth fundamental of Problem Solving is to choose one solution that the team or individual agree on. It’s important to choose one solution so that the team or individual is able to gauge the impact of that solution.

5. Evaluate Solution

The fifth fundamental of Problem Solving is to evaluate the chosen solution. It is important to evaluate that solution before you attempt to implement the solution, as well as you have implemented the solution, in order to understand what adjustments need to be made in order to ensure that the chosen solution has achieved the desired outcomes.
